The Man Inside Of Me
(via Preview: It Girl & the Atomics #8 - Comic Book Resources)
I’m really into this cover from It Girl and the Atomics, a comic written by Jamie S Rich, drawn by Mike Norton (usually), colored by Allen Passalaqua, and lettered by Crank!. It’s a good comic, if you haven’t read it. Sort of an… accessible take on traditional cape comics? It’s a comfortable comic. It feels like those midlist Marvel & DC books we all like.
Anyway, this cover was created by Aaron Conley, Mike Allred, and Laura Allred. Laura A colored it, I assume. I’m not sure what Mike A did, but this is different enough from his work that I assume Mike A may have done layouts, maybe, while Aaron Conley did the pencils & inks? I don’t know, exactly, but the finished product is really strong. I like that there are five characters on-screen with five different types of lips (the two women are similar, yes, but the shapes differ). I like the details on the clothes, like the waviness of It Girl’s crop top (her jewelry game is on point, too) or the draping of
pause — I just realized that the poster says “The David Lynch Mob” which is the most amazing thing ever. Ice Cube on vocals, David Lynch on bass?
the draping of The Slug’s orange top, the posture of her purse… the way Mr. Gum’s shirt hangs over his belt is very real. Love them yellow cowboy boots, too. I like how this feels like an album cover. It may be an homage to something, but I dunno.
Good comic. Good cover.
edit: These are Mike A inks over Conley pencils! process here.
My next comic is a double-mini-comic in full color from Drippy Bone Books. It will debut at CAKE Chicago! I made this gif on a crappy website. I don’t know how to make a GIF!
